This week, the cultural committee of the German parliament announced that there had been a positive cross-party response for the initiative working towards a national monument.
Representatives of the conservative Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union, the Social Democrats, the opposition free-market liberal FDP and the Green party, along with the instigator of the plan, Berlin theologian Richard Schröder, are apparently all in agreement that the time for a high-level discussion on such a monument has come.
The statement from the committee released Thursday said that the Bundestag should take this opportunity to begin an initiative to create a monument that represents "one of the happiest moments in German history."
