 | | Jay-Z is a rappers’ Renaissance Man. He has his own label (Roc-A-Fella records), his own clothing line (Roca Wear) and his own successful movies (“Paid in Full,” “State Property”).
After building up his empire and assaulting the charts with his army of rappers and producers, Jay-Z retired in 2003 — or did he?
Obviously, the man just can’t stay away from his art. He performs tonight at the Pontiac Silverdome as part of the “Roc-A-Fella 4th of July Takeover.”
Jay-Z, whose pop-rap style wooed audiences in the ’90s and continues to influence rap, will perform alongside Dame Dash, Kanye West, Cam’ron and the Diplomats, Young Gunz, Freeway, Memphis Bleek, Juelz Santana, Oschino and Sparks, Peedie Craak, Twista and Lil’ Flip.
Although performers Twista and Kayne West are sure to draw a crowd, it will be the quasi-retired Jay-Z the audience will flock to.
Songs such as “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)” and “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)” garnered Jay-Z a radio audience to add to his already large and loyal street following.
Jay-Z has collaborated with the who’s who of rap and hip-hop. Missy Elliot, Eminem, Beyonce, the Neptunes and the Roots have all helped Jay-Z build his lucrative career.
