Science and TechnologyApple Computer Inc.'s CEO Steve Jobs made the visit worthwhile for Mac fans when he revealed the features of the company's upcoming operating system, code-named Tiger. This will be the 10.4 version.
Tiger will be available starting Q1, 2005. This will be Apple's fifth major upgrade to the OS X platform. During the conference, Steve Jobs reported Tiger to be loaded with features. One of the most emphasized features in the new OS is "Spotlight". Spotlight is a new search feature in Tiger that will let users search for files throughout their machines and organize them according to type, time, and people. The new OS will have Safari's, Apple's web browser, new version, which will have RSS feeds built-in. The browser will display an icon for RSS enabled sites, which, when pressed, will turn the browser into a RSS reader. There will also be plethora of multimedia options in Tiger. The Dashboard feature will use Apple's Expose technology to offer instant access to many applications. This information will include, but not limited to, quotes, webcams, calenders, and calculators. The new version of iChat in Tiger will support the new video codec, H.264, for improved picture quality, multi-person audio and video conferencing, and a new 3D interface. Apple's video player, Quicktime, will have support for MPEG-4 video codec and the ability to run 64-bit processes for database, engineering, and scientific applications. The enterprise version of Tiger will include native support for 64-bit applications, an application for hosting weblogs, and a secure version of iChat for high-profiled meetings within an organization. Apple is keeping the same prices for the upgrade to Tiger, $129.00. The server will run around $499.00 for 10-client edition. Analysts expect avid Mac users to gladly accept Tiger when it comes out in the market early next year.
