EnviromentNot much of a request, you might think, to go and see a wild flower, even a very rare one - I mean just see it, not pick it or dig it up; just look at it and take a few photographs, admire it and appreciate its beauty. What's the big deal about that? So in one way it seems strangely excessive to be on a train speeding out of London on a cold March morning, bound for a distant cathedral city, where this request will be formally deliberated upon by a secretive and little-known committee.

Allergic Or Just Plain Paranoid?

EnviromentOur environment is making us ill The mass production of foods and the increasing use of chemicals must affect us in some way, especially when antibiotics and hormones are used in intensive farming and meat production. In addition to this, our obsession with cleaning has given us less opportunity to become desensitised to everyday dirt and dust. Infections are treated immediately with a range of antibiotics and so our immunity is not able to build up. According to the National Asthma Campaign, asthma is reaching epidemic levels in the UK especially in adults. Although pollution is not as obvious now as when industrial smoke choked the air, traffic fumes and river pollution continue to grow. Perhaps when people are ill they may suspect they have an allergy rather than an underlying complaint, as it seems to be trendy to be allergic. This undermines the problems of real, sometimes life-threatening allergies.
