The wonders of modern technology (and good ol' Xanax): Odd couple Quentin Tarantino and Sofia Coppola actually look cute strolling arm in arm up the red-carpet steps on my laptop DVD player, which I'm using as a catch-up tool on the late-night plane toward the Cannes Film Festival. No worries about what the nervous flyer and procrastinating critic may have missed since the world's swankiest film event got underway three nights ago. Columbia University Professor Annette Insdorf relays the crucial information on the IFC's Cannes Opening Ceremonies--Live! program (I burned it to disc before leaving home): Festival jury president Tarantino and his fashionable date are, the professor reports, "very good friends."

Time was when British character actors were handed out the minor parts in Hollywood blockbusters, but now in Wolfgang Petersen's martial epic Troy they're positively running the show, a new one seeming to pop up in every scene. Here's old favourite Brian Cox as Agamemnon, Brendan Gleeson as Menelaus and Sean Bean as Odysseus; there's Peter O' Toole as the venerable King Priam, and Julie Christie as Thetis, the mother of Achilles. The names become less familiar as the cast list scrolls down, but you'll still probably recognise James Cosmo, and Vincent Regan, and, isn't that Eddie Shoestring behind the beard? Yes, it really is Trevor Eve, playing third warlord from the left. Trust the Brits to be shoulder to shoulder with the Americans when there's a war on.

When we last left Shrek and his fairy tale friends in the Enchanted Forest, they were tearing through "I'm a Believer." "Shrek 2" is here to make us believers all over again. Even if some of the novelty has worn off slightly, the sequel to the 2001 computer-animated hit is just as fast, funny and smart as fans were hoping it would be.
