General HealthHigh blood pressure during pregnancy is a warning sign of diabetes and heart disease later in life, a Dutch study indicates.

The study of 491 older, postmenopausal women found that those who had reported high blood pressure during a pregnancy had a 57 percent higher risk of developing calcium buildup in their arteries, compared with those whose blood pressure did not rise abnormally during pregnancy.

National Cancer Institute (NCI) scientists have discovered how human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1), which infects about 20 million people worldwide, evades being held in check by o­ne of the body’s natural defense mechanisms. An active infection with HTLV-1 leads to T-cell leukemia in up to five percent of all cases worldwide. NCI is part of the National Institutes of Health.

At the same time, the birth rates for mothers aged 30 and older rose in 2005 to levels not seen in nearly 40 years.
