Defeated French centrist Francois Bayrou has said he will not back either of the remaining candidates in the French presidential election.

About 6.8 million voters backed the centrist candidate in the first round of the election and could swing the run-off. "I will not give any advice on how to vote," Mr Bayrou said at a long-awaited news conference. When asked what his personal vote would be, he said he had not yet made up his mind. Mr Bayrou made it clear that he would not take up any offers of ministerial posts in a Segolene Royal government. He also announced he would create a new centrist Democratic Party, which will put up candidates in the forthcoming general elections in June.
