THREE of the four accused in the LeisureNet trial - Peter Gardener, Rodney Mitchell and his wife, Susan - today pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.

The pleas came on the second day of the trial, immediately after acting judge Dirk Uijs ruled against an application for the separation of the trial of the forth person in the dock, Hans Moser. Moser has yet to plead as the court is currently hearing a lengthy explanation of the pleas of the other three. Gardener and Mitchell face charges of fraud, money-laundering, income tax evasion and contraventions of the Companies Act. Moser and Mrs Mitchell face money-laundering charges only. In rejecting Moser’s bid for a separation Uijs said he had taken into account the cost and inconvenience to the State and witnesses if the trials were separated, and the fact that Moser could renew the application later in the trial. He also said it was important that the State be allowed within reason to place its cases before the court in the way it thought appropriate.
