General HealthA shortage of foster families means that children in care are being placed in homes miles away from their friends, relatives and schools.
Experts estimate that an extra 8,000 foster carers are needed in Britain to ensure that all children in care are placed close to their own homes with families that can look after them until they return to their birth family or live on their own. Twenty five per cent of children placed in foster care in England have to live outside their own local authority. In Scotland and Wales, the figure ranges from 20 to 25 per cent. In the worst cases, children are moved hundreds of miles away. More than 41,000 children live with 32,000 foster families in Britain. Arthritis theory A rise in rheumatoid arthritis could be the result of the 19th century’s most dreaded disease, tuberculosis. Survivors may have had a protective gene that makes descendants susceptible to arthritis, according to the US research scientist Dr James Mobley writing in the journal Medical Hypotheses.
