 | | LEGAL papers
were served on President Thabo Mbeki today informing him that former
director-general of Intelligence Billy Masetlha plans to contest his
sacking. Sapa
Mbeki’s spokesman, Mukoni Ratshitanga,
said the papers were received in the morning and were being studied,
but would not comment further.
Masetlha was dismissed by Mbeki last week. "This decision
derives from the president’s determination that the relationship of
trust between him and the head of NIA had irreparably broken down,"
government spokesman Joel Netshitenzhe said on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the inspector-general of intelligence,
Zolile Ngcakani, implicated Masetlha in the hoax email saga that has
rocked the National Intelligence Agency.
Masetlha’s attorney Imran Haffajee told Sapa that
Masetlha was not fired but that Mbeki amended his "terms of office"
which would have seen him left the position in 2007.
"It is this terms of office that we would ask the Pretoria High Court to rule on," Haffajee said.
In the meantime police have made no arrests in relation to the hoax email saga.
The people behind the hoax emails that sought to
implicate influential figures in the ANC in a supposed plot against
Jacob Zuma would be charged "very soon", national police commissioner
Jackie Selebi said on Saturday.
"It was mischief of the highest order, very dangerous mischief at that, threatening the security of the state," he said.
His spokeswoman, director Sally de Beer, however said no arrests were made today, she did not give any other comment.
