Science and TechnologyA new variant of the Sasser computer worm, which infected millions of computers last week, has appeared on computers worldwide, suggesting a man arrested Friday in connection with the worm was part of a group, a company specializing in computer security software said.
The new Sasser worm, which exploits flaws in the XP and 2000 versions of Microsoft's Corp.'s Windows operating system, shows the same effect as the original and is already affecting computers around the world, Panda Software International said. German police on Friday arrested an 18-year-old German high school student, who has since admitted creating Sasser. If convicted, he faces as much as 5 years in prison, police said Saturday. Sasser was detected a week ago. "This fact confirms our fears that he is not the only person programming the Sasser and Netsky worms, but rather it is an organized group of delinquents," Luis Corrons, head of PandaLabs, said in an e-mailed statement.
