PostNuke Exit polls in the Palestinian territories show President Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah faction ahead yet losing the absolute majority, with up to 46 percent of votes for 63 seats.
The chief rival of Fatah, the radical Hamas group, came in a strong second, capturing between 35 and 39 percent for up to 58 seats in the 132-seat parliament. Senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyah told the news agency Reuters that his group was defining its role in a future government. Israel and the United States have rejected dialogue with Hamas, whose charter calls for the destruction of the Jewish state. Preliminary election results are expected in the coming hours, with an official count due next week. The parliamentary poll was the first in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in over a decade.
