RUNDU - A shout
that there was kudu in the road, followed by the terrified screams of
passengers as their minibus veered wildly in another direction is all
that a survivor can remember of Tuesday night's horror crash near
Grootfontein.

Sitarara (20), a second-year student at the Polytechnic of Namibia, not
only miraculously survived, but escaped with minor physical injuries. He attributes his "luck in the face of tragedy" to the Almighty. Twenty-seven other passengers died. Speaking
to Nampa from his residence at the Kehemu Informal Settlement, Sitarara
said after the screamed warning of a kudu being in the road, he saw the
vehicle veer off in another direction. He thinks that the heavy duty truck hit their passenger bus twice. Beyond that, he does not know what happened. "I cannot really recall what happened ... ," said Sitarara. His next memory is waking up in the Grootfontein State Hospital on Wednesday morning. Sitarara was sitting in the back seat of the Iveco bus and was flung out of the vehicle during the collision. He said he planned to return to Windhoek tomorrow morning as his examinations could start on Monday. |
