General HealthPeople with AIDS may be vulnerable to Alzheimer's Disease, mainly due to the anti-viral medicines used to treat their condition, according to researchers.
University of Pittsburgh researchers, led by Dr. Cristian L. Achim presented their findings at the International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders on Thursday. Researchers examined the brains of 150 people infected with HIV, they found two-thirds contained deposits of beta-amyloid, one of the abnormal proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease. Although deposits were mainly found inside brain cells, in many cases beta-amyloid was found outside cells as well, consistent with the pathology of Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Cristian L. Achim noted the results are preliminary.
