 | | Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill Vol. 2" blasted its way to No. 1 at the box office this weekend as Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" dropped from first to ninth. "Kill Bill Vol. 2," which stars Uma Thurman and finishes the "Vol. 1" story that opened last fall, earned an estimated $25.6 million.
That put it well ahead of the latest comic book character to invade the big screen, "The Punisher," which took $14million.
No other film earned more than $6.4 million, and the weekend spotlighted two major flops.
Disney's $100 million historical epic "The Alamo" earned $4 million, finishing 10th and raising its two-week total to a paltry $16.3 million.
"Connie and Carla," a new comedy starring Nia Vardalos of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" fame, limped into 13th place with $3.3 million.
"The Passion" took its expected drop after an Easter weekend revival, earning $4.2 million.
Its total stands at $360.9 million, good for seventh place all-time. "Return of the King" is sixth with $376 million.
Chief Operating Officer Rick Sands of Miramax, which released "Kill Bill," said this weekend's take showed that the decision to split "Bill" into two movies was dead-on.
"It wouldn't work with every film," he said. "But for this one, it did. You didn't have to see the first one to appreciate this one, and because it was less violent, we had more women this time."
