 | | The long-awaited sequel to Hollywood blockbuster Spider-Man had its UK premiere in London on Monday. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst star in the movie, which opened in Leicester Square.
Spider-Man 2 has already broken cinema records in the US and Canada, and is expected to do the same in the UK.
It took $46m (£25m) in North America at the weekend, taking its total to $257m (£140m) after two weekends and keeping it top at the box office.
Actor Maguire returns as the reluctant superhero and his alter ego Peter Parker.
This time he battles evil in the shape of a new nemesis, Dr Octopus, played by British actor Alfred Molina.
Actress Dunst is back as Spider-Man's love interest Mary Jane Watson.
The film opens around the UK on Friday.
The original Spider-Man in 2002 swept away previous box office records, grossing more than $820m (£448m) worldwide.
In the US and Canada, Spider-Man 2 took $40m (£21m) on its opening day and crossed the $200m (£109m) mark in a record eight days.
The Los Angeles Daily News called it "the best comic book movie ever" while the New York Post said: "Sequels don't get much better - or smarter."
In the latest North American film charts, comedy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy entered at two, taking $28m (£15m).
Disney film King Arthur took $15m (£8m), while Michael Moore's anti-George Bush documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 dropped to four with $11m (£6m) in its third weekend.
