International NewsFrance and Iraq have re-established diplomatic ties broken off in 1991 by Iraqi former President Saddam Hussein during the Gulf War, French Foreign Ministry's spokesman Herve Ladsous said in a statement on Monday.
"The government of the French Republic and the government of Iraq, wishing to promote and reinforce the ties of friendship and cooperation existing between their two countries and two peoples, on the basis of mutual respect for their sovereignty and in accordance with the principles of the United Nations' Charter, have taken the decision to re-establish diplomatic relations from July 12 and to exchange ambassadors as soon as possible," he said. France opposed the US-led war that toppled Saddam last year butmade clear that it will help train Iraqi security forces and support limited forgiveness of Iraqi debt.
