 | | Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki paid tribute to his visiting Namibian counterpart Sam Nujoma, who is due to retire next year, calling him "a great source of pride for Africa," an official statement said on Friday. Kibaki said Nujoma played a "heroic" role as the longtime leader of the anti-apartheid Swapo during the country's independence struggle, the presidential press service statement said.
"Indeed, your personal links with Kenya stretch way back to the period of gallant struggle for Namibia's independence under your heroic leadership," Kibaki told Nujoma during a state banquet late on Thursday.
Nujoma was on a three-day visit as part of a farewell tour to several African countries, as well as China and Malaysia, ahead of his resignation.
"During the difficult years of our protracted armed liberation struggle, Kenya extended diplomatic and material support to us," Nujoma said, according to the Kibaki's press service.
Early on Friday, Nujoma laid a wreath at the mausoleum of Kenya's founding president Jomo Kenyatta in Nairobi.
