Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said that the economic reforms he has pursued have been effective and he will keep pursuing policies to change the world's second-largest economy.
The message from the people yesterday was to push ahead with reforms,'' Koizumi at a press conference at Liberal Democratic Party headquarters one day after the LDP failed to achieve its target of winning 51 seats in elections for the upper house of parliament. The LDP won 49 seats in the vote, according to preliminary results broadcast by NHK Television, fewer than some polls had predicted and two short of Koizumi's target. The main opposition Democratic Party of Japan garnered 50 seats. The election was for half the 242 seats in the chamber. Koizumi also said that he wants Liberal Democratic Party Secretary General Shinzo Abe to keep working for the party in that post. He also said that Japan will keep working to reduce the amount of bad loans at the nation's banks. Regarding foreign policy, Koizumi said he will keep trying to establish diplomatic relations between Japan and North Korea. He also said he will work to attract more independent voters to his party.
