 | | Sirius Black (Gary Oldman): Harry's godfather and best friend to Harry's legendary father, this powerful wizard was charged with killing 13 people with a single curse. Upon conviction, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Azkaban Prison. He does the impossible by escaping Azkaban and is heading for Hogwarts for a fearsome rendezvous with Harry.
Professor Remus J. Lupin (David Thewlis): The latest to occupy the seemingly cursed post of Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor at Hogwarts. He's an engaging blend of competence and compassion. Still, there's something ... odd about him, especially his unexplained absences from school whenever there's a full moon.
Professor Sybil Trelawney (Emma Thompson): Hogwarts' instructor in divination ("fortune-telling," to some of you Muggles) may well be the most gaudily frosted of the school's many flakes. Hers, not surprisingly, is one of the few classes that pragmatic, tenaciously logical Hermione can't dominate.
Madame Rosmerta (Julie Christie): Warm-hearted proprietor of the Three Broomsticks, an inn-pub that's the hottest gathering place in Hogsmead, England's remote metropolis of magic. She's a wiz at making butter beer.
Ernie (Jimmy Gardner): He drives the bus from London to Hogsmead. Make sure you hang on tight to those straps.
Shrunken Head (Lenny Henry): Ernie's dashboard ornament and mouthy backseat driver.
Buckbeak: Hagrid's newest prized pet is a Hippogriff, sort of a hybrid of a condor and horse. Scary and noble, you'll probably see him flying around in future installments.
Professor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon): We know Dumbledore's not a new face. But Gambon's is. Assuming the role after Richard Harris' death two years ago, Gambon is perhaps best known for playing the title role in Dennis Potter's classic 1986 TV miniseries, "The Singing Detective." He played LBJ in the 2002 HBO movie "Path to War" and also played a not-so-noble nobleman who is murdered in 2001's "Gosford Park."
Dementors: Hooded wraiths that constitute a secret - and dreaded - police force. Think of them as the "dark ops" of the magic world, capable of sucking your soul by kissing your face. You'll probably see them flying around in future installments. (Shudder!)
